Swine Flu: Don’t panic, says expert

The campus witnessed another initiative to address the Swine Flu panic when the Centre for Social Concern (CSC) organised a talk by Dr Pretesh Kiran, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health and the Convener of the Disaster Management Unit, St Johns Hospital. The audience raised many questions which Dr Kiran answered patiently.

Among other things, he spoke about the severe consequences of swine flu, such as having difficulty in breathing, pneumonia and so on. He stressed on the promotion of “Respiratory Etiquette” such as “covering your nose while sneezing, washing your hands frequently and maintaining good standards of hygiene.”

Dr Kiran also spoke about how the media had created a lot of unnecessary hype around this disease. “When people see the panic depicted on television it causes them to panic as well,” he said.

Mr Benson Issac the co-ordinator of CSC and Dr Kiran advised the students present to participate in dispelling this panic by promoting and spreading awareness about Swine Flu on campus.
