The Department of Physics began its two-day State-level workshop on Multi-Wave Length Astronomy here on Thursday. The workshop was inaugurated by Fr Terence Farais, the Rector. Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto was present.
In his key-note address, Prof. G. Srinivasan spoke about the survey of multi-wavelength astronomy and the different windows available to study the universe. He also explained extra solar planet, neutron stars, gravitational wavelength, present satellite to be launched origin of galaxies, and also on Chandrashekhar Limit.
Rector, Fr Terence said, “St. Joseph’s College has to be the centre of learning not only for the students but also for the public.” He added that the workshop was timely in the Galileo year and called upon the stude
The workshop covers lectures on complete spectrum of radiation from radio waves to x-rays and gravitational waves. The resource persons are from Raman Research Institute RRI), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA),Uday Shankar from RRI who spoke about Radio Astronomy. There was also a lecture on Galaxy Clusters in Radio Waves by Mr Dwarkanath. The organisers said that the students also would get a chance to do sky watching.
‘It’s a good occasion for the students to learn more about different fields of astronomy, since they are coming in contact with the scientists who are actually doing the research work,” said Prof. Lora Menezes from Physics Department.
