Opining that there was no need of a Bt variety of brinjal, Kiran Jeevan of MSW department said, “India itself is producing thousands of variety of food products. Our farmers are growing abundant brinjal which are good for the health.”
“We have enough natural brinjal and I do not think that there is necessity of Bt Brinjal. Organic food is better than the Genetically Modified (GM) food and we have the gut right to say no to Bt Brinjal,” said, Sr Valsa FMM, Department of MSW.
“It is not proved that Bt Brinjal is completely safe and it is a matter of food. This is the right time for people to raise their concerns before the Minister about Bt Brinjal. I think the organic farming is the best alternative to this. We will come to realise the consequences of this only after its commercialisation,” said Benson, Department of BSW.
Samuel Sathyaseelan, student organiser from II MSW said, “It is the intimate game played by the government and the corporate sector. At present farmers of our country are growing crops freely. GM crops cannot be stored for the next sowing season. Thus farmers have to spend exorbitant amount of money to buy seeds every year. They will not have alternatives and they will totally become dependent.”
