NET coaching begins on campus

If you are looking at a career as a lecturer, this coaching is for you. SJC for the first time has arranged for coaching classes for National Eligibility Test (NET) for lectureship and Junior Research Fellowship. This pioneering initiative was inaugurated at the PG centre By Rector, Fr Terence Farias on February 9.

Fr Rector said that India was lagging in the field of research. “Out of the 100 top universities in the world, not a single one from India appears, which is very sad and is a clear indication that the higher education in India is still not of international standard. NET will help students pass other important entrance test,” he said.

The classes are scheduled to be conducted every Tuesday and Wednesday from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Students from Science and Arts background can apply at a nominal cost of Rs. 1000. Science students have two papers: Paper 1 is general knowledge(GK) and Paper 2 is subject specific. Arts students have three papers, Paper 1 which is GK, Paper 2 and 3 are subject specific.

The co-ordinator of the programme, Ms Savitri Krishnamurthy said, “It is an essential qualification for students aspiring to teach. It is a very tough test; it takes at least 3 or 4 attempts to clear the test. We are coaching them in advance to face the test, so that they can clear it in the first attempt. Students who have passed can get monetary help from UGC to conduct their research. Teachers also can join, as it is mandatory for lecturers to have passed NET.”

Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto said, “Passing NET will give students an added advantage to get guides easily for PhD and M Phil. The College has always given support for research and would do everything required to help students achieve success in NET.”

“I am happy that NET coaching classes are being conducted in our campus as we don’t have to go elsewhere. Our department teachers would also helps us during this course along with the co-ordinator,” said A.K Sandhya, student of PG Microbiology.
