Beware of ‘globalisation of superficiality’: Rector

Rector of St Joseph’s Institutions, Dr Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu has called upon students to beware of the ‘gloabalisation of superficiality’ that is ruling the world today.

He was addressing the new batches of Post Graduate students at the Xavier Hall here on Saturday, June 26. The students went through a half-day orientation.

Quoting the Superior General of Jesuit Order, Fr Nicholas Adolpho, Fr Prabhu said, “Though the world today is a world of internet and globalisation, what we see as a fall out is a globalisation of superficiality. It is a ‘cut and paste’ approach without the need to think critically or write accurately, or come to one’s own conclusions.”

He also added that while internet has lots of ‘information’, it “makes us read less and think less”. “What we witness is a superficiality of thought, vision, dreams, relationships, and convictions,” Fr Prabhu added.

He called upon the students to fight such superficiality and put hours of hard work every day that leads to deeper analysis, reflection, and concrete findings.

Speaking on the same lines, Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto explained that the difference between the UG and the PG is that while in the former subjects are taught, in the latter they are learnt.

He urged the students to develop a critical mind as it is important for students and teachers to discuss and debate on important issues.

Fr Pinto said that St Joseph’s was not a College that prepares students for the Market. “Ours is a College that prepares men and women who will bring about a change, transformation in society. Hence, greater emphasis is given to academics here,” he added.
