College cricket team gets renowned coach

The College has appointed a new coach for the boys’ cricket team.

He has already become one among the favourites for the students. Popularly known as Baba Sir, he has coached some of the country’s best cricketers like Rahul Dravid, Javagal Srinath, Robin Uttappa, Venkatesh Prasad, among others. Baba Sir has been coaching for the past 25 years and thinks that cricket is his religion and a way of life.

“I have been a Josephite throughout my student life and now have come back to be of some use to the College,” he says with glee.

He further says, “I am a service oriented, action oriented and result oriented person. I am coaching the lads, but I am still learning and I don’t consider myself as a Guru.”

When asked about the College cricket team and his expectations, he said, “They are a promising and an enthusiastic team, but still there is always scope for improvement. It’s been only three days since I’ve come and I still have to get to know their potential.”

Looking forward to new year

The new batch of students at the PG centre is all excited to begin their new year at St Joseph’s. In fact, many consider their admission to the College as an important achievement. On the other hand, there are also a considerable number of students who have just crossed over to the PG from the UG campus.

Mohit
Priti Choraria, a student joining M. Sc Chemistry, was happy about the fact that she was continuing her PG in the same college. She said, “I know most of the teachers as I did my degree here. So I am used to the system and the teaching method, and I am looking forward to it.”

Priti
Smith Maih of M. Sc Microbiology was glad that he got into SJC. “I heard from my friends that the education is good here. The college has a reputed and all facilities. Though I didn’t meet our teachers personally, I am sure they will be cooperative and encourage us through our academic year,” he said.

Smith
Mohit Chopra, MSW, felt that the orientation programme was awesome. “The orientation class was really interesting as the inspiring words from the Principal encouraged us to work hard throughout the year. So it is a good way to start off our academic year,” he added.
Vandana
Vandana Raju Gopal, M. Sc Botany, was excited about her first day in the College. She said, “I wanted to join here for degree, but didn’t get the seat. Now I am happy that finally I am doing my PG here.”

Beware of ‘globalisation of superficiality’: Rector

Rector of St Joseph’s Institutions, Dr Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu has called upon students to beware of the ‘gloabalisation of superficiality’ that is ruling the world today.

He was addressing the new batches of Post Graduate students at the Xavier Hall here on Saturday, June 26. The students went through a half-day orientation.

Quoting the Superior General of Jesuit Order, Fr Nicholas Adolpho, Fr Prabhu said, “Though the world today is a world of internet and globalisation, what we see as a fall out is a globalisation of superficiality. It is a ‘cut and paste’ approach without the need to think critically or write accurately, or come to one’s own conclusions.”

He also added that while internet has lots of ‘information’, it “makes us read less and think less”. “What we witness is a superficiality of thought, vision, dreams, relationships, and convictions,” Fr Prabhu added.

He called upon the students to fight such superficiality and put hours of hard work every day that leads to deeper analysis, reflection, and concrete findings.

Speaking on the same lines, Principal, Fr Ambrose Pinto explained that the difference between the UG and the PG is that while in the former subjects are taught, in the latter they are learnt.

He urged the students to develop a critical mind as it is important for students and teachers to discuss and debate on important issues.

Fr Pinto said that St Joseph’s was not a College that prepares students for the Market. “Ours is a College that prepares men and women who will bring about a change, transformation in society. Hence, greater emphasis is given to academics here,” he added.
